'Broker': Hirokazu Kore-eda Reportedly Working On A New Film Starring Song Kang-ho

Hirokazu Kore-eda is one of the best filmmakers working today. Full stop. So, the second we learn new information about a new project from the director, you better believe we’re going to get excited. And judging by the information about his upcoming film, tentatively titled “Broker,” we have every reason to expect another great feature from Kore-eda.

According to news from Pierce Conran on Twitter, Kore-eda is lining up his next film, “Broker,” which will find the Japanese filmmaker working with a Korean cast to tell a story about the baby box phenomenon in South Korea. For those not aware, the baby box is a dropbox that parents can use to anonymously turn in their young babies to be given up for adoption. Judging by that inspiration, it’s clear why Kore-eda would tackle a project such as this, considering this is the filmmaker behind incredible family dramas such as “Like Father, Like Son” and the Palme d’Or-winning “Shoplifters.”

Not only do we know a title for the film and a rough idea of the inspiration for the plot, but we also have a few members of the cast. According to the report, Song Kang-ho, Doona Bae, and Gang Dongwon are all going to star in the feature. Obviously, even if you’re not a huge fan of Korean cinema, the name Song Kang-ho immediately stands out. He’s probably best known, at least to the general public, as the star of the Oscar-winning “Parasite.” Before that, he appeared in a number of huge films such as “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance,” “Memories of Murder,” “The Host,” and “Snowpiercer.”

As pointed out in Conran’s tweets, Bae has previously worked with Song on three separate films and has worked with Kore-eda on one, as well, “Air Doll.” And Gang has worked with Song on the film “Secret Reunion.”
