Casting: Jared Leto Seeks 'Brilliance' Instead Of Will Smith, Sam Worthington Heads To 'Gallipoli' & More

Dallas Buyers Club

With an Oscar in his hands, presumably Jared Leto has his pick of movies, and it looks like he’s eyeing former Will Smith gig “Brilliance.” The Fresh Prince dropped out last month, but Leto is in early talks for the movie that’s based on the novel by Marcus Sakey, set in “a world where a rare set of people are born with extraordinary abilities and are called ‘brilliants.’ At the center of the story is a federal agent with great hunting gifts who is drafted to track down a terrorist, another such brilliant who intends to start a civil war.” Woo. Noomi Rapace is still attached in a supporting role with Julius Onah to direct. [Deadline]

Before he spends the next forever making “Avatar” sequels, Sam Worthington has started production Down Under on the TV miniseries “Deadline Gallipoli.” Hugh Dancy, Rachel Griffiths, Bryan Brown, Ewen Leslie, Jessica De Gouw, Anna Torv, James Fraser, Charles Dance, Joel Jackson and John Bell will co-star in the six-hour drama about a team of Australian and English journalists who covered the infamous World War I battle in Gallipoli and were instrumental in the decision to end the campaign against Turkish forces. In addition to starring, Worthington is producing as well, with Michael Rymer (TV’s “Hannibal,” “Queen Of The Damned“) directing. [Inside Film]

Daenerys Targaryen might be busy building empires, tending to her dragons and excommunicating ex-friends among other Queen-like duties, but Emilia Clarke apparently does have time to squeeze in some acting roles in the downtime between “Game Of Thrones” seasons. The actress will star in the psychological thriller “Voice From the Stone.” Based on the Italian novel “La Voce Della Pietra” by Silvio Raffo, Andrew Shaw is adapting the screenplay, and Eric D. Howell will be making his directorial debut on the project. Set in the ’50s, the story follows “a nurse (Clarke) who is helping a boy through the trauma of his mother’s sudden death. As she works with the troubled child, she becomes ensnared by a malevolent force inside the family’s castle.” Production starts this fall. [THR]

Call it temporary un-casting. The rumors are true. Harrison Ford’s injury on the set of “Star Wars: Episode VII” is a broken ankle and it will cost him eight weeks away of rest away from the production. You can bet whatever schmoe is responsible feels like garbage if he isn’t already fired out of existence. [THR]

Evidently a “Father Of The Bride 3” is in the works (maybe… read on). Disney/WB are reportedly working out right for Charles Shyer (“The Parent Trap“) to write and direct the sequel now that Nancy Myers has passed on the job. Steve Martin is expected to return and word is it will be a gay-themed third wedding.  So says NikkiFinke. Then again Steve Martin himself says, “So excited to read I’m doing Father of the Bride 3 since I haven’t seen a script or been offered the role!” Oh, darling Nikki.

For a minute there, the Weinstein’s “Chef” picture looked super exciting because Derek Cianfrance was possibly going to direct and reteam with Bradley Cooper. It didn’t happen, but perhaps that meant the script was at least decent? We”ll see, as Cooper’s “American Sniper” co-star Sienna Miller has joined a cast that includes Omar Sy. The film centers on a chef trying to build the ultimate restaurant. John Wells is set to helm. [Variety]
