Casting: Mark Wahlberg Joins 'Deepwater Horizon,' Johnny Depp Flexes For Kevin Smith's 'Yoga Hosers' And More

Transformer: Age of ExtinctionStill no sign of J.C. Chandor‘s "A Most Violent Year" on the fall festival slate, but while we wait to see where the film pops up (*cough* Telluride *cough*), the director is keeping busy with the lineup for his next, "Deepwater Horizon," landing none other than Mark Wahlberg for the lead role. The movie is based on a true story and will find the actor playing the "No. 2 manager on the doomed oil rig" in the movie that "revisits the acts of heroism that followed in trying to rescue men in the water, stories not known to the general public." Production starts next year. [Deadline]

Giovanni Ribisi, Ty Simpkins, Scott Mescudi, Mark Feuerstein, Kevin Corrigan, and Juno Temple join Olivia Wilde, Luke Wilson, Elisabeth Moss, and Natasha Lyonne in the indie "Meadowland." The film follows "Sarah and David, who deal with the unthinkable in the wake of their son’s disappearance. David, a New York City policeman, attempts a more traditional form of healing, only to lose his moral compass. Sarah goes down an unexpected path towards acceptance as she places herself in increasingly dangerous situations." Production is now underway. [MovieWeb]

With Jon Favreau and Disney mounting "Jungle Book" for release next year, Warner Bros. refuses to be left behind. They’ve got their own version, helmed by Andy Serkis, and Benedict Cumberbatch has been voice-cast as the stealthy Shere Khan. In case you’re wondering, Idris Elba has the same part in Favreau’s film. Which do you prefer? [THR]

Adrianne Palicki has been cast as Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird in "Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." The character was first teased during Comic-Con, and for now she is only slated to appear in the next season’s fifth episode. But we presume her role will be much bigger than that. [THR]

Johnny Depp has a new BFF and his name is Kevin Smith. The actor has a not-so-secret cameo in "Tusk," and now he’s officially boarding the director’s next effort, "Yoga Hosers." The action adventure/comic book movie will also feature Depp and Smith’s daughters, Lily-Rose Depp and Harley Quinn SmithTony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Tyler Posey, and Jason Mewes are also aboard alongside Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman, Jennifer Schwalbach, and Harley Morenstein

The plot, you ask? It centers on "15-year-old yoga nuts Colleen Collette and Colleen McKenzie who have an after-school job at a Manitoba convenience store called Eh-2-Zed. When an ancient evil rises from beneath Canada’s crust and threatens their big invitation to a Grade 12 party, the Colleens join forces with a legendary man-hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe to fight for their lives." Uh, okay.
