Charlie Cox Trusts Marvel Studios But Doesn’t Think ‘Daredevil’ Will “Work As Well In A PG World”

Earlier this week, it was announced that the Marvel Television series that were produced for Netflix, including “Daredevil,” would be coming to Disney+ later this month. Joining those series on the streaming platform is a new parental controls option, due to those series featuring adult-oriented, mature content that borders on R-rated. That, combined with “Daredevil” actor, Charlie Cox, showing up in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” has fans excited about the prospect of a potential continuation of the ‘DD’ story in the future. But will it be R-rated or more kid-friendly?

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Charlie Cox talked about that weird situation and explained that he has the utmost faith in Marvel Studios to figure it out. That said, he also thinks “Daredevil” works best when you’re given a bit of freedom to explore the more adult situations and themes, which don’t always fit nicely in a PG/PG-13 box.

“I wouldn’t put it past the folks at Marvel to be able to accomplish that. I’m such a fan of everything they’ve done so far, I wouldn’t underestimate them at all,” Cox said about a potential family-friendly version of “Daredevil.” “So if they wanted to make a more PG version of ‘Daredevil,’ I back them to find a way to do where it feels totally in keeping with everything we’ve done. And maybe there’s a little less blood, maybe there’s a little whatever, but I back them to do it.”

He adds, “My feeling is that the comics work best. The ‘Daredevil’ comics, for me, are more exciting, readable, relatable when they live in a darker space…It absolutely can work, but I guess what you can’t deny is Daredevil is never going to work as well in a PG world as Spider-Man does. Do you know what I mean? That’s the point. I think that the age of the character, the Christian guilt, his history with women and stuff, it’s like it’s a little bit more mature, it has to be.”

For those who haven’t seen the “Daredevil” series on Netflix, not only does the series have a lot of bloody violence and salty language, but it also includes themes of the show, involving quite a bit of religious imagery and adult situations, stuff you wouldn’t see in a typical MCU show or film. This would make it seem improbable that Marvel Studios would be interested in doing a Season 4 of “Daredevil” that picks up right where it left off. However, it’s clear with Cox being re-introduced in ‘No Way Home’ and the “Daredevil” villain Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) showing up in “Hawkeye,” Marvel has plans for these characters. We just have to wait and see how they materialize and how dark they’re able to go.

“Daredevil” and the rest of the Marvel/Netflix series are hitting Disney+ on March 16.
