Charlie Hunnam Would Be "Honored" To Play James Bond But Thinks Tom Hardy Is The "Front Runner"

A year ago, people swore that Idris Elba was the next James Bond. Now, it’s Tom Hardy that is definitely, maybe, probably going to take over for Daniel Craig as the suave superspy. But since we’re throwing names out there, what about Charlie Hunnam, the star of the new drama, “Jungleland?” Well, according to the actor, he’s down to play Bond (and who wouldn’t be?) but he doesn’t think people should bet money on him inheriting the coveted role.

Speaking to People, the former “Sons of Anarchy” star was asked if he’s in the running for the role of James Bond when Craig steps away after “No Time to Die” next spring. While he is “100 percent” ready, willing, and able to take over the role, he doesn’t believe it’ll happen.

“I would be so flattered and honored to be considered to play James Bond as an Englishman,” he said. “But my intuition tells me that I shouldn’t be waiting for that phone call to come. I think there are many people ahead of me on that list.”

Hunnam added, “As much as people want to talk about me playing James Bond, please continue. Maybe that’s the genesis of these things. Maybe fan chatter leads to industry people actually talking about it in a more serious way.”

Considering his comment about there being “many people” ahead of him on the list, the actor did shed some light on who he thinks is the front runner for the role. And for those that like to navigate the Bond rumor mill, the name he brings up won’t be all that surprising.

“The person that I hear about in that conversation is Tom Hardy,” Hunnam said. “I hear that he’s really the front runner. I think that would be sensational. I’m an enormous Tom Hardy fan so I would love to see him as James Bond.”

The rumors around the casting for the next Bond actor seem to have been stuck on Hardy in recent weeks. Before that, names like Henry Cavill and Idris Elba have been mentioned. That being said, a recent interview with producer (and creative driving force behind the franchise) Barbara Broccoli seems to suggest that the search hasn’t even begun and likely won’t until Daniel Craig’s new film, “No Time to Die,” finally hits theaters next April.
