One of the most anticipated films of 2021 is Matt Reeves’ superhero reboot, “The Batman.” Not only is the film on the radar of many cinephiles due to the fact that it’s the newest iteration of, arguably, the world’s most popular superhero, but also because the filmmaker has put together one of the most interesting casts to ever grace a film of this type. And one of those cast members is Colin Farrell, who is set to portray the villain known as The Penguin in the upcoming film. But according to the actor, fans shouldn’t expect a whole lot of Penguin when “The Batman” hits theaters next year.
Speaking to GMA News, Farrell was asked about “The Batman” and how excited he is for filming to restart after the pandemic. And in describing his excitement, he goes on to explain that he’s still got work to be done on the production, but overall, there isn’t a lot for him to do in the upcoming ‘Batman’ film.
“I had only started [‘The Batman’] and I can’t wait to get back,” said Farrell. “The creation of it, the aesthetic of the character, has been fun and I really am so excited to get back and explore it. And I haven’t got that much to do. I have a certain amount in the film. I am not all over it by any means. But there are a couple of some tasty scenes I have in it and my creation and I can’t wait to get back.”
He continued, “Yeah, I totally feel like it is something that I have not had the opportunity to explore before. It feels original and fun. But I am only at the start of the journey so I can’t wait to get back and really get into it.”
In the months of rumors and speculation about “The Batman” before we even got casting news for the film, there were many that discussed how the film wasn’t just establishing new versions of the characters of Batman and his various villains for the first film, but really, it is meant to lay the groundwork for a new series of films in the future. Basically, unlike the way that most superheroes introduce a villain in a film and then dispense of them before the end credits roll, “The Batman” is poised to give us a peek at various villains, some of which won’t have full stories in this first film.

And it appears that is the case, with Farrell saying as much in those comments. That being said, this doesn’t mean that fans will be any less excited to see what Farrell and the rest of the villains will be up to in the film. Clearly, director Matt Reeves has put together a fine Rogues Gallery of characters with incredible actors portraying them such as Farrell as Penguin, Paul Dano as Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. Plus, we’ll probably venture a guess that there are even more surprises bound to show up, particularly with the mysterious character of Gil Coulson, played by Peter Sarsgaard.
“The Batman” is expected to hit theaters on October 1, 2021. That is, if production can resume in a timely manner.
