This fall, students across the country will be entering their first year of film school, but The Criterion Collection will be putting on some classes of their own with their lineup of September releases.
Leading the pack is Michael Haneke‘s powerful “The Piano Teacher” starring Isabelle Huppert. The director’s second entry on the boutique label won’t be brimming with too many extras, but we should just be thrilled that the film, long unavailable on DVD, is in print, and coming newly restored as well. This is a must-have.
Acclaimed filmmaker Kelly Reichardt makes her debut on Criterion with the celebrated indie “Certain Women” starring Kristen Stewart, Michelle Williams, Lily Gladstone and Laura Dern. The release will be slim in terms of extras, but it’s nice to see this small movie get a big boost.
Sensing that you might be missing “Twin Peaks” after its over this summer, Criterion will satisfying fans with the documentary, “David Lynch: The Art Life.” The film is an intimate look at Lynch as an artist, not filmmaker, as he reflects on his life and past.
With three other lean releases, the meat of Criterion’s September lineup is found in Alfred Hitchcock‘s “Rebecca.” The stone cold classic is back in print, boasting a new 4K restoration, audio commentary, a slew of interviews and featurettes, and a documentary on the making of the movie. It’s a towering picture, which is deservedly getting an equally towering home video release. Don’t sleep on this one.
