Sony had high hopes for Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” series. Not only would there be a trilogy but some spin-offs, including the much-discussed “Sinister Six,” a female-led movie in the Spidey-verse that may or may not have been Spider-Woman, or even that rumored (and later debunked) Aunt May spin-off. As we all now, none of that worked out and the Webhead is now a piece of the giant Marvel jigsaw puzzle, though Sony still has a stake in the rights. While we’ll never actually see how Webb might have brought his Spider-Man trilogy to close, in a chat with IGN at Comic-Con, Denis Leary — aka Captain Stacy — revealed some of the early discussions that were taking place for what could have been “The Amazing Spider-Man 3.”
Leary may have been there to promote his new FX series, “Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll,” but the comedian-turned-actor was more than happy to talk about what might have been with Peter Parker’s story and boy, is it crazy. As he told it, “There was this idea, at one point, that Spider-Man would be able to take this formula and regenerate the people in his life that died. So there was this discussion that Captain Stacy would come back even bigger in episode three.” Yikes! Maybe they regretted killing off Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy?

To be fair to Webb and the writers, the regeneration storyline could have been one of a dozen ideas batted around for the second sequel, but the fact that this was even up for discussion — and it made it to one of the actors, no less — underlines just how little the creative team and studio knew about where to take the franchise. It’s probably for the best that Marvel has taken over the creative reins of Spider-Man from Sony because we’re not sure if fans would have been willing to see the dead walk again in the Spidey-verse.
