Drake Doremus Wants Kristen Stewart & Nicholas Hoult For Sci-Fi 'Equals'

Kristen Stewart Nicholas Hoult

Update 1/16/14: AP confirms Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult for the film.“In ‘Equals,’ things go wrong because you can’t deny the humanity in everyone. t’s the most devastating story,” Stewart said about the film which she compared to “1984.”

Drake Doremus is the kind of filmmaker we love to watch. Breaking out with his 2011 heartbreaker “Like Crazy,” the filmmaker has stayed busy while also slowly and gradually expanding his horizons. His short film series “The Beauty Inside” for HP found him playing with episodic storytelling, while keeping his intimate approach intact, and his upcoming “Breathe In” (our review) starring Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones was another well-observed look at the complex emotions of love and fidelity. And while we’re still (frustratingly) waiting for that latter effort to hit screens in the U.S. (it played Sundance and has opened in the U.K., but Cohen Media Group are yet to unveil it here), he’s lined up his next gig. And again, he’s pushing things in some intriguing ways.

Doremus is eyeing Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult to star in “Equals,” a futuristic love story he’s cooking up.  Penned by Nathan Parker (“Moon“), there’s not much in the way of plot details, but the director has long been discussing his goals for the movie. ” ‘Like Crazy’ was about the past and had a very nostalgic feel to it, and kind of about my past. [‘Breathe In’] is about confronting the idea of love in the present, and then what love means in the future is what I’m interested in exploring next,” he told told Movies.com earlier this year.

“It’s not going to be out of hand, but I think it’s a logical next step, if that makes any sense without giving too much away, of the budget realm,” Doremus  told Little White Lies about the size of the movie.

Frankly, we’re pretty excited. Doremus has shown a really assured hand so far for tone and style, and to see him apply that to a genre effort is something we’re curious to see. If it all comes together, shooting will kick off in early 2014. [Deadline]
