'Perry Mason' Trailer: HBO Brings a Beloved Character Back To TV Screens

HBO’s “Perry Mason” is proving to be stacked both behind and in front of the camera, and fans are finally being treated to a first look. Matthew Rhys brings author Erle Stanley Gardner’s criminal defense lawyer Perry Mason to life. Rhys, who is probably most well-known for starring in the FX smash hit “The Americans,” is riding into “Perry Mason” with a little extra star power, as he recently starred in the Oscar-nominated, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”

Tatiana Maslany and John Lithgow co-star alongside Rhys in the upcoming HBO miniseries. Susan and Robert Downey, Jr. are among the show’s many executive producers. And to add to the already impressive lineup, Tim Van Patten will direct and executive-produce “Perry Mason,” with Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones acting as writers and showrunners. HBO fans will likely already be familiar with this trio’s work. Van Patten directed episodes of “Game of Thrones,” “The Sopranos,” “Boardwalk Empire” and more. Fitzgerald was an executive producer of “Westworld.” Jones acted as executive producer on “Boardwalk Empire.”

Here’s the show’s official synopsis: 

Set in 1932 Los Angeles, the limited series will focus on the origin story of famed defense lawyer Perry Mason, based on characters from Erle Stanley Gardner’s novels. Living check-to-check as a low-rent private investigator, Mason is haunted by his wartime experiences in France and suffering the effects of a broken marriage.

L.A. is booming while the rest of the country recovers from the Great Depression — but a kidnapping gone very wrong leads to Mason exposing a fractured city as he uncovers the truth of the crime.

“Perry Mason” will drop on HBO on June 21.
