With Halloween just a little more than a week behind us, it’s clearly time to move into the Christmas season, right? Well, in Hollywood, that seems to be the case, as this weekend marks the debut of the season’s first holiday-themed film, “Last Christmas.” And while out promoting the film, star Emilia Clarke has found herself not only trying to get people to see the Paul Feig-directed project but also to stop spoiling everything.
You see, ever since the first trailer for “Last Christmas” was released, social media went crazy with theories about the film’s seemingly mysterious plot. What seemed like a fairly simple story about a disgruntled woman that meets a strikingly handsome man (Henry Golding) who teaches her how to not only be thankful for the life she has but celebrate the Christmas spirit, has turned into a film rife with theories about possible twists and turns. And in doing so, Clarke told IndieWire recently that fans are ruining the surprise.

“It’s bloody annoying. Frustrating,” Clarke said about the plot of the film. “It’s more complicated than people are guessing.”
Without getting into spoilers (and trust me, it doesn’t honestly matter because you’ll guess it anyway), there is a third-act reveal in the film that changes the entire story and how you view at least one of the characters. And depending on your thoughts about the reveal, you’ll likely either be pleasantly surprised and touched or frustrated (like me) that the film thinks it’s so damn clever. Either way, with social media spending the weeks before the release of “Last Christmas” breaking down the footage and guessing what the reveal might be, Clarke is obviously frustrated.
The actress said that the film’s reveal was conceived by Emma Thompson and her partner Greg Wise, and no one should be able to see it coming. (Sadly, she’s wrong, as the reveal, again, is freaking obvious.)
“Emma and Greg wrote this script together, but they sent the script to all of their friends and it was only ready when their friends didn’t see the twist coming and couldn’t guess until it happens, so that’s where it comes from,” Clarke said. “It’s just frustrating.”
Ultimately, even though she’s upset over the spoilers, Clarke understands why “Last Christmas” has become a highly-debated film.
“Our world’s literally on fire, so I think that there’s a lot of things outside of people’s control, so when it comes to this kind of stuff, they can do something with it and want to,” she explained. “It’s done with so much fervor, it’s done with a huge amount of energy and all that is, is misdirected energy.”
“Last Christmas” arrives in theaters today.
