David S. Goyer And Josh Friedman To Develop Sci-Fi Series 'Foundation' For Apple

It seems as if every streaming company is looking for their own epic series to compete with “Game of Thrones.”

While Amazon is spending $1 billion (or more) on their “Lord of the Rings” series and Netflix readies their own epic series “The Witcher” (as well as the other million other TV series they release each week), Apple is trying to get in the “epic” series game, as well.

According to Deadline, Apple is now developing a series based on author Isaac Asimov’s famous “Foundation” series. The series, which has long been in development as a movie but deemed too sprawling and epic for film treatment, follows a mathematician named Hari Seldon who develops a study known as psychohistory. With his new study, he is able to predict the future on a large scale, and with this power, Seldon foresees the fall of the Galactic Empire and a future Dark Age.

Foundation” is being developed by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman. Goyer is no stranger to sci-fi, having worked on the upcoming “Terminator” reboot, but is perhaps best known for his superhero work, with “The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Blade,” and “Ghost Rider.” Friedman is a writer that also has a writing credit on the new “Terminator,” as well as a variety of sci-fi movies and TV series, including the upcoming “Snowpiercer” series for TNT.

Apple is trying to compete with the likes of Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu with their impressive lineup of TV projects. In addition to “Foundation,” the massive tech company is also working on a series with stars Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, an anthology series called “Amazing Stories” from Steven Spielberg, a sci-fi series from “Battlestar Galactica’sRonald D. Moore, and an untitled series from Academy Award-winner Damien Chazelle.

No word on a release date for “Foundation,” but Apple did give the project a straight-to-series order. So, it looks like viewers will finally get a chance to see the Asimov classic brought to life.
