HBO's Renews 'Insecure' For Season Three

Insecure” was a hit when it debuted on HBO last year, turning its creator and star Issa Rae into an exciting and fresh mainstream voice. In addition to writing and directing, Rae stars in the series (her character’s name is also Issa) that follows the experiences of a modern-day African-American woman as she navigates her career, relationships, and racial tension, partially-based on her well-received 2011 web series “Awkward Black Girl.”

The success of “Insecure” was certainly a good look for HBO, offering viewers a more inclusive replacement for “Girls” and adding a much-needed diverse voice to their line of programming. While its renewal for a second season was pretty much a given, the surprise may be how quickly the show is returning; slated for a return less than a full year after its debut. Here’s the synopsis of the show in case you haven’t watched and you absolutely should be doing just that.

Created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, INSECURE follows the friendship of two black women as they deal with their own real-life flaws while attempting to navigate different worlds and cope with an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences. Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis and Lisa Joyce star in the show, which returned for its eight-episode second season Sunday, July 23 (10:30-11:00 p.m. ET/PT). Season two credits: INSECURE was created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore; executive produced by Issa Rae, Prentice Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry.

And perhaps it’s not much of a surprise that “Insecure” has been renewed for a third season (and so has “Ballers” starring Dwayne Johnson; though as one of the biggest stars in the world, I’m sure he’d rather focus on feature films).   “We’re thrilled that the summer lineup of BALLERS and INSECURE connected with our viewers out of the gate,” Amy Gravitt, executive vice president at HBO Programming said. “We’re so proud to work with Dwayne, Issa and all of the amazing talent in both shows.”

Clearly the show has connected in a big way. Will Issa have her life more figured out when “Insecure” hits the airwaves on season three or will she still be trying hard AF? We’re getting ahead of ourselves; season two just started last month and we’ll see how she continues to handle those hilarious, squirm-inducing interactions thought the rest of  the summer. “Insecure” is currently on HBO as we speak and here’s a season two preview for the weeks ahead.
