Henry Cavill Wants His Superman To “Make People Feel Like Superman Themselves”

As if the end-credits of “Black Adam” didn’t make it obvious enough, Henry Cavill recently confirmed that he is set to return to the DCU in a big way as Superman. However, nothing is really clear about what that return might look like. Presumably, we’re getting a new solo film. There’s probably hope for a team-up, “Justice League”-esque film in the future, as well. While nothing along those lines has been officially announced, Cavill is content with sharing his hopes for what the feeling of a new “Superman” project might be.

According to an interview with Screen Rant, Henry Cavill is opening up about his joy at returning as Superman in the DC Universe. He’s also talking about what he wants audiences to feel as they watch the Man of Steel on screen. And honestly, it’s music to the ears of people looking for a Superman filled with joy and hope.

“There is so much in the way of conversations to be had,” explained Cavill. “Obviously, I have a very close connection to the character. And there is something extraordinarily special about him; extraordinarily special about his capacity to give and to love. I don’t mean romantically; I mean his love for Earth and for the people who live here, and to make people feel powerful—to make people feel like Superman themselves.”

He added, “I have plenty of desires for this, of course, which will be discussed more in time. But the most important thing, which I will be aiming for, is for the audience to leave the cinema and to feel like they can fly, to feel like they can protect, and to feel like they want to give to everyone else. That would be my goal.”

When you look at the comic books and pick out some of the very best Superman stories that have been told, there’s a common theme of the hero not punching someone super hard but just helping people and trying to do better for the entire world. Sure, he also is the most powerful being on the planet (or most planets, to be honest), but as has been pointed out numerous times, in films and other mediums, Superman is a symbol for hope. It’s clear that Cavill’s desire is to lean into that for future appearances.

As mentioned, it’s unclear what that future might look like. You have to assume, as a new “Superman” film feels a few years away, we’ll see Cavill show up in cameos again in the not-so-distant future. Hopefully, with more appearances, we’ll see how the actor is changing the status quo of his iconic character.
