Jake Gyllenhaal Reteaming With Antoine Fuqua For A Remake Of 'The Guilty'

Right now, the big question that is being asked around the film industry is how studios will adapt to the new COVID-19 safety protocols and if films will resemble what they did pre-pandemic? While we don’t have the answers to that just yet, we do know that folks are starting to adapt to the new protocols with creative projects that allow for a small cast and not many locations. And that’s just what Jake Gyllenhaal and director Antoine Fuqua are doing for their upcoming film, “The Guilty.”

According to Deadline, Fuqua is set to direct an English-language remake of the Danish film, “The Guilty,” which Jake Gyllenhaal attached to star in the film and produce. For those not familiar with the 2018 original from director Gustav Möller, “The Guilty” follows the story of a 911 operator (Gyllenhaal) that answers an emergency call from a kidnapped woman, who he desperately tries to help. Of course, there’s way more to the story, as secrets are revealed and twists happen. But needless to say, it’s a solid thriller that is now in the hands of very capable people including writer Nic Pizzolatto, who is adapting the film and is best known for being the creator of “True Detective.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to work with Antoine again,” said Gyllenhaal. “Our time together on ‘Southpaw’ was one of the great artistic experiences of my career, and I cannot wait to be back on set with him again. ‘The Guilty’ is a special story, and one that we all feel very close to.”

As Gyllenhaal mentioned, this isn’t the first time that he and Fuqua collaborated. They also worked together on the 2015 boxing drama, “Southpaw,” which earned mixed reviews from critics but earned a healthy box office total. Even if you didn’t see the film, you probably remember the shock when pictures were released from the feature, showing just how muscular Gyllenhaal got for the role.

The reason “The Guilty” is being made now, per the report, is the fact that it can be shot in a single location with a small cast and easily adhere to the strict safety guidelines that film productions have to follow now. The film is said to begin production in November.
