James Gunn Teases An "Unannounced DC TV Show" He's Writing

Earlier this week, James Gunn hinted on social media at a big announcement that he and fellow DC Studios co-head Peter Safran will make about the DCU‘s future later this month. Any word on what that announcement officially covers? Not really, only that it’ll deal with the first three years of Gunn and Safran’s eight to ten year plan. But Deadline reports that a tweet from Gunn late last night may offer a sample of what’s to come: an “unannounced DC TV show.”

Here’s the full text from Gunn’s tweet yesterday evening: “My day: wrote 1/3 of an unannounced DC TV show; ok’d 100 VFX shots, did reference acting for Rocket, & gave editing notes for Vol 3; & had two big DC Studios meetings.” Gunn currently juggles his DC Studios duties with wrapping up post-production on “Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol. 3.” But what’s this unannounced show? Well, it’s not “Peacemaker” Season Two, and it’s likely not the Amanda Waller spinoff series with Amanda Waller either. But a new does suggest that the DCU will utilize HBO Max streaming model moving forward, as it plans to with “The Penguin” and the other spinoff series to Matt Reeves’ The Batman.”

But let’s be honest: so much is up in the air right now regarding the DCU’s future. So here’s what fans at least do know.  Henry Cavill won’t return as Superman, and Gunn has a new movie about the Man Of Steel’s early days in the works with a new actor donning the costume.  Gal Gadot is gone as Wonder Woman too, and so is Patty Jenkins‘ “Wonder Woman 3,” but Gunn dismissed rumors that the superheroine won’t be back in the new DCU’s opening phase. However, Dwayne Johnson‘s Black Adam won’t be part of the new DCU’s first phase, although the character may “utilized” later on, as per Johnson on social media.  Ben Affleck may be on board to direct a DC future sometime soon, too.

It’s hard to know what to expect from Gunn and Safran’s announcement later this month. After all, the duo have only been the co-heads of DC Studios for a couple of months: hardly enough time to hone eight to ten years of DCU content completely. But expect a few juicy bits of info about upcoming movies “The Flash,” “Blue Beetle,” and “Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom.” And additionally, maybe Gunn will roll out some info on this unannounced TV show he’s a third of the way through. Only time will tell, but expect the DCU’s future to come into sharper focus soon.
