Last year, after months of delays due to the pandemic, Disney’s long-awaited live-action remake, “Mulan,” was finally released. The film got mixed reviews overall, but many people were really happy with the work director Niki Caro did in the fantasy action film. Now, she’s moving onto more grounded action in her next feature, “The Mother,” with Jennifer Lopez attached to star.

According to Deadline, Jennifer Lopez is set to star in “The Mother,” a new action-thriller that Niki Caro is in talks to direct. The film is written by “Lovecraft Country” creator Misha Green and tells the story of an assassin (Lopez) that comes out of hiding to protect a daughter that she gave up years before. The report claims the action film has “The Professional” vibes, referencing the Luc Besson thriller.

As mentioned, Caro is probably best known for her work on the recent “Mulan” blockbuster. The filmmaker first broke out with the 2002 drama, “Whale Rider.” Since then, she’s directed features such as “McFarland, USA” and “The Zookeeper’s Wife.” She’s also set to direct episodes of the highly-anticipated series, “Daisy Jones and the Six.”

Of course, Jennifer Lopez is one of the biggest names in the world, with decades of major films under her belt. Most recently, she earned acclaim and awards recognition for her role in “Hustlers.” She’s next set to appear in the upcoming film “Marry Me.” She’s also set to star in films “The Godmother” and “Shotgun Wedding,” with the latter experiencing a bit of controversy after Lopez’s co-star, Armie Hammer, dropped out at the last minute after sexual misconduct allegations.

It’s unclear when “The Mother” might arrive on Netflix, but this is definitely a project we’ll be keeping an eye on.
