Mackenzie Davis & Kristen Stewart To Be Romantic Leads In Upcoming Rom-Com 'Happiest Season'

Back in November, we learned that Kristen Stewart had joined the cast of Clea Duvall’s big studio debut film, “Happiest Season.” Those two names were enough to get us excited about the potential film. But now, with the latest bit of casting, consider our excitement at its peak.

THR is reporting that Mackenzie Davis has signed on to star opposite Stewart in the upcoming film. “Happiest Season” is being described as a “lesbian romantic comedy” that follows a young woman who is planning on proposing to her girlfriend at a family gathering but is taken aback when she realizes her partner hasn’t come out to her conservative family.

As you might have guessed the two romantic leads are going to be portrayed by Stewart and Davis. Stewart is a known-quantity, at this point. She’s done everything from major franchises to the indiest of indies and come out as one of our finest actors working today.

Davis, on the other hand, is still making a name for herself. After turning heads on the criminally underseen “Halt and Catch FireAMC series, she’s been plugging away with scene-stealing roles, but has yet to fully break out. Last year alone, she starred in “Izzy Gets the Fuck Across Town,” which was incredibly underrated, and “Tully,” which featured Davis out-acting Charlize Theron and the rest of the cast. All eyes will really be on her this year when “Terminator 6” comes out. (Film fans need to pray to the film gods that the “Terminator” franchise doesn’t chew up and spit out another fine actress.)

Duvall directed one other feature film in the past, albeit a small indie. “Happiest Season” is her debut from a major studio and with Stewart and Davis aboard, will probably get a major push in theaters. Duvall co-wrote the script with Mary Holland.

There’s no release date set, but production is probably going to begin sometime soon, which leaves a 2020 release in mind.
