'The Goldfinch' Exclusive Music: Listen To 2 Tracks From The Score For The Upcoming Awards Contender

We are about to experience the kickoff to perhaps the biggest film festival of the fall, TIFF. And one of the most anticipated films premiering in Toronto is “The Goldfinch.” Based on the acclaimed, best-selling novel of the same name, “The Goldfinch” stars Ansel Elgort and Nicole Kidman and figures to be part of the end of the year awards conversation. And one of the areas where the film might find recognition is in the score.

With “The Goldfinch” premiering this weekend and WaterTower Music releasing the new soundtrack for the film, we’re proud to give our readers the opportunity to listen to two exclusive tracks from the score for the drama. The film’s original score is composed by Trevor Gurekis, who previously worked on projects such as “Bloodline,” “Wetlands,” and “Kardec.”

“With the score, I think we’re lucky to witness the arrival of a major new musical voice in Trevor Gureckis. As an audition piece, he wrote 12 minutes of music for the film, fully mindful that he might not get the job. But he won it…and then some,” said director John Crowley.

“Writing ‘The Goldfinch’ was thrilling not only because of the huge orchestral forces at hand but also for the opportunity to explore rich textural details with the use of electronics in service of the story,” said Gureckis. “There are moments of vivid impressionism in the orchestra, as well as tapestries of glowing and burning synth textures.”

He added, “A real turning point in figuring out this score was when John Crowley realized we needed the Goldfinch to appear in the music itself, not just visually in the film. It would be our North Star. So, the opening cue sets the theme that returns in many different transformations depicting anything for the painting to Theo’s traumatized state of mind, as the two are so intertwined. Just like the painting of the bird chained to its post, this theme is suspended harmonically throughout the entire score resolving only in the final moments of the film.”

Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated “The Goldfinch” arrives in theaters on September 13. The soundtrack, from composer Gurekis, will be available tomorrow.

Here’s the synopsis, as well as the two exclusive tracks:

Theo Decker was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love.
