Writer/director Nicole Holofcener is one of those rare filmmakers working today who is actually interested in simple stories about real people instead of overly complicated mythological tales involving superheroes or giant fighting robots. In small, measured films like “Walking and Talking” and “Lovely & Amazing,” she is able to mix humor and drama in a way that feels undeniably real. And even when her movies are somewhat minor successes (like 2010’s “Please Give“), you’re still hugely thankful that she is out there, making the films that she does. Her new film, “Enough Said,” featuring one of the last performances by James Gandolfini, is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before opening nationally a few days later. Ahead of that premiere comes a new clip and some new photos.
The movie stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a masseuse who falls in love with Gandolfini. The hitch is that one of Louis-Dreyfus’ clients (played by frequent Holofcener collaborator Catherine Keener) is Gandolfini’s ex-wife and so she’s constantly being fed all of this dirt about her new boyfriend. The trailer for the film was incredibly warm and charming and funny and made us very excited about the film, which co-stars Toni Collette, Michaela Watkins and Ben Falcone. The new clip does little to dilute that enthusiasm.
In the clip Gandolfini is asked to recall the line-up of a specific television station on a specific date and he does so, reciting the list of cartoons and shows that aired during that time. It’s a nifty little monologue, and when Louis-Dreyfus shows a combination of surprise and concern, Gandolfini says, “I was raised like a veal… I was put in a dark room and fed and told not to move.” It’s really a lovely little scene and will make you very sad, all over again, thinking about how the actor is no longer around.
