Original 'Friends' Cast In Talks To Return For A Reunion Special For HBO Max

A “Friends” reunion is in the works. But before you freak out and text everyone you know in sheer excitement, it’s probably not the type of reunion you were hoping for.

According to Variety, the original cast of “Friends,” which includes Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer, is currently in discussions to appear in a reunion special that would debut exclusively on HBO Max, which is soon to be the only streaming platform to carry the hugely popular sitcom. However, instead of doing a revival episode or a miniseries, the cast will join for an unscripted special that will likely include them sharing stories and secrets about the behind-the-scenes goings-on that occurred while filming the iconic series.

The “Friends” reunion would also include the co-creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, who would, again, share stories and whatnot.

Kauffman has previously already ruled out the idea of an actual scripted reunion or revival of “Friends.” She said, “There are two reasons for that. One of the reasons we won’t do a reunion is because this is a show about a time in your life when your friends are your family. And when you have a family, that changes. But the other reason is it’s not going to beat what we did.”

Much like “The Office,” despite both series’ incredible post-mortem life on streaming services, it appears that there are major hurdles to both having brand-new seasons. Other shows from the ‘90s, including “Mad About You,” “Will & Grace,” and “Roseanne,” have all enjoyed comebacks, with varying degrees of success. Hell, with “Walker, Texas Rangergetting a reboot, you don’t even need to be one of the best shows of all time to get brought back. But in the case of “Friends,” that’s just likely never going to happen.

So, if this reunion special does end up happening, this is likely the last time you’ll see the cast come together and officially speak about “Friends” on camera. Otherwise, you’ll just have to rewatch the series for the 10th time.
