Oscar Isaac On Returning To Superheroes In ‘Moon Knight’ After ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’: “We’re Making Something That’s Quite Different”

It’s not some sort of hot take to say that “X-Men: Apocalypse” is a bad superhero movie. And the bar for quality superhero films can be set pretty low. One of the main issues with that film comes down to the role of Apocalypse by Oscar Isaac. There’s no denying Isaac is one of the finest actors working today, but he was just buried under mountains of prosthetics and given the thankless job of delivering some truly terrible lines of dialogue. After that experience, you wouldn’t fault Isaac for not jumping into a new superhero role for the rest of his career. Yet, he’s set to lead the cast of Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series, “Moon Knight.”

In a new interview with TotalFilm, Isaac talks about his reason for coming back to the superhero filmmaking world after a brutal start in ‘Apocalypse,’ an experience he once dubbed “excruciating.” And it would appear the main reason is because of the unique story he gets to tell with “Moon Knight,” as well as the joy of working with Marvel Studios.

“It’s not so much about the genre of things. It’s the people. And is there room to do something interesting in it? And sometimes there is, and you think there will be. And sometimes it turns out there isn’t,” Isaac explained about coming back to the superhero fold. “So with [‘Moon Knight’] – I love the people involved. I thought there was an incredibly unusual story to tell within the world of, you know, the superhero language. But we’re making something that’s quite different, and that doesn’t follow the same… not necessarily even logic of what a lot of superhero films do. I think because of that, I just found an opportunity to do something that I’ve not done at all yet, and to have a lot of creative collaboration with the rest of the people making it.”

He added, “Every morning, the alarm goes off, and I can’t wait to get to work. We’re having such a great time on this thing.”

For those unaware, “Moon Knight” is expected to tell the story of Marc Spector, a former Black Ops soldier that finds himself imbued with the powers of the moon from the Egyptian god, Khonshu. But there’s one big problem. You see, Spector also has a severe mental illness, suffering from Disassociative Identity Disorder, which gives him multiple personalities. Not a great situation for a Marvel superhero.

“Moon Knight” doesn’t yet have a release date for Disney+, but the series is one of many that is currently in production or in development from Marvel Studios. With filming happening now, it’s expected that we’ll see Isaac debut as the character in 2022.
