It’s a pretty great month to be a Paul Thomas Anderson fan. This week, his surprise documentary "Junun," featuring Radiohead maestro Jonny Greenwood, premieres at the New York Film Festival and will premiere on Mubi shortly thereafter. And now you’ll be able to see another new project by the filmmaker on a big screen near you.
Having already knocked out the terrific video for Joanna Newsom‘s "Sapokanikan," Anderson has directed "Divers," the title track from the musician’s forthcoming album — and it’s hitting cinemas. The song itself is just a shade over seven minutes long, and the video was shot in New York City at the studio of Kim Keever, with Newsom finding herself in the landscapes of the artist’s work, which features on the cover of Divers.
“I like the fact that it’s not clear whether they represent a period of time before humans, or a period of time after humans, the post-apocalyptic thing, or whether they represent just a part of the world where there are no humans, or whether they represent an iteration of Earth within the multiverse where humans never evolved to exist,” Newsom told The New York Times about Keever’s work. “And I like that the landscapes are viewed from a great distance in most cases, which is an image that comes up for me a lot in these songs, viewing things from above, speeding over landscapes.”
There’s no word yet on the length of Anderson’s video, but it will only be screened in cinemas, so you’ll have to make your way there. Check out the full list of theaters and dates below and watch the video for "Sapokanikan" right here.
