Rami Malek On 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Director Drama: "I Would Never Let This Film Be Unfinished"

While it seems that many film fans and general audiences have completely forgotten about the behind-the-scenes turmoil surrounding the upcoming Freddie Mercury/Queen biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Rami Malek wants everyone to know that no matter what happened, he was going to finish the film.

Malek stars as Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the iconic rock band. And as if he was channeling the spirit of the late Mercury, the actor felt it was his duty to see the production through to the end. Even though, late last year, the film was halted towards the end of production when director Bryan Singer was unceremoniously fired.

When Singer was let go from the film, it was reported that the dismissal stemmed from the director’s erratic behavior, which included unexplained absences, unprofessionalism, and unreliability. There was also a reported clash between the star and director, with Singer allegedly throwing an object at Malek. Needless to say, it wasn’t surprising when Dexter Fletcher was brought in to finish the film.

Well now, in an interview with EW, Malek opens up about the drama, but basically just to say that there was going to be nothing stopping him from completing the film. “I can wholeheartedly say I would never let this film be unfinished,” says Malek. “Every moment where there was a challenge on set, I just reminded myself: What would Freddie do? And I guarantee, he would’ve seen it through.”

Apparently, what really helped the actor get into character on set had nothing to do with the costumes or the music. It came down to the teeth. “When you put in those teeth,” he says, “there’s a very visceral change to the performance. When I took them out by the end of the film, I felt quite naked.”

And if you’ve seen any trailers from the film, you can see how those teeth are definitely noticeable. To be fair, Malek does definitely look like Mercury.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” hits theaters November 2.
