One of the most visceral and memorable movies of the year, Oliver Laxe’s “SIRĀT” took a Jury Prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and was selected as Spain’s International Film Oscar entry earlier this month. One of the key elements of the film is its hypnotic original score by David Letelier, aka by his stage name Kangding Ray. In anticipation of its original score dropping on October 1, Invada Records and NEON have provided The Playlist with an exclusive premiere of “Katharsis,” a track co-produced by Laxe. You can listen to it embedded in this post.
Described as “a fusion of electronic minimalism and North African sonic textures,” the score album features 10 new compositions, and, according to a release, “previously unreleased compositions that underscore the film’s themes of disappearance, connection, and liberation through sound.” If you are a fan of house or electronic music, and house or electronic music in cinema, this one’s for you. And if we had an Academy vote for Original Score, it would be right up there.
Set in the very near future, perhaps tomorrow, perhaps next summer, “SIRĀT” follows Louis (Sergi López) and his son Esteban (Bruno Núñez Arjona) on a mission to find his daughter Mar, whom they have not seen in five months. Their journey finds them at an underground dance festival in Morocco, where they meet a group of Spanish ravers who think they recognize her photo. When world events outside Morocco force the military to close the festival, Louis and Esteban join the ravers’ caravan toward a secret rave in the desert where Mar may have headed.
The soundtrack release coincides with the film’s sold-out U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival on Wednesday, Oct. 1. It will then screen as part of Beyond Fest in Los Angeles on Friday, Oct. 3. It will also screen at the Mill Valley, Hamptons International, BFI London, and Orcas Island Film Festivals, among others.
“Sirat” has already performed well at the Spanish and French box office so far, taking in $5.8 million worldwide. It will open in limited release in the United States on Nov. 14.
