‘Soul’: Pixar Gives Plot Details & Release Date For New Animated Film

We are mere days away from “Toy Story 4” making all sorts of money and leaving audiences in puddles of their own tears. The Pixar franchise that really kickstarted the entire studio is wrapping things up with its fourth film in the series, and the company has said that it marks the end of an era of sequels. Now, with “Toy Story 4” wrapping up, Pixar can focus on new films, such as the just-announced “Soul.”

Pixar tweeted an announcement today, letting fans know that the studio is working on a new film titled “Soul,” which will arrive in theaters in one year. Not much is known about the film, with no specific casting named, but the studio says the film will begin in New York City and take audiences on a journey to discover the answers to life’s big questions.

“One year from today, Pixar Animation Studios will take you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions. Disney & Pixar’s ‘Soul’ arrives in theaters on June 19, 2020,” read the announcement.

With the next film on the slate being the upcoming “Onward,” which appears to be a fun, light-hearted romp, it looks like Pixar might be switching gears a little for “Soul.” Judging by the title and the description, we’re getting “Inside Out” vibes from the film already, with its apparent tackling of deep, philosophical questions.

And if “Inside Out” is a good comparison for “Soul,” then fans of quality, touching filmmaking will be in luck. “Inside Out” is often regarded as a high mark in Pixar’s catalog, with the way that the film spoke about growing up and the mental issues that affect young people. Perhaps “Soul” will serve a similar purpose, with a heartfelt message combined with the signature Pixar fun.

As the announcement says, we’ll find out what “Soul” is all about when the film arrives in theaters on June 19, 2020.
