'The Disciple' Trailer: Festival Standout Produced By Alfonso Cuarón Arrives On Netflix Next Month

Obviously, when you watch the trailer for the upcoming Netflix film, “The Disciple,” you are shown the incredibly technical aspect of Hindustani classical music. But even though a lot of the people that watch the film might not be overly familiar with that genre of music, the tale being told in the film is something a lot more universal.

“The Disciple” follows the story of an Indian classical vocalist, Sharad Nerulkar. He wants nothing more than to be the very best at his craft than anyone else. Unfortunately, even though he’s talented and devoted, he just doesn’t have all of the skills necessary to rise above and fulfill his ambition.

“The Disciple” stars Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, Deepika Bhide Bhagwat, and Kiran Yadnyopavit. The film is directed by Chaitanya Tamhane. And interestingly, Alfonso Cuarón has put his seal of approval on the feature, serving as executive producer.

In our review from last year’s Venice Film Festival, we said, “Although Tamhane’s sedate pacing might put off those expecting a more visceral dive into the culture of Hindustani music, ‘The Disciple’ is profound in its microcosmic world-building, slowly creating Sharad’s life through individually realized moments, adding up to an extraordinary portrait of a failed artist.”

“The Disciple” is set to arrive on Netflix on April 30. You can watch the first trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

A musician’s unadulterated devotion, a mirage-like quest for divinity, and the courage to fight your own mediocrity. The Disciple is the tale of an Indian classical vocalist, Sharad Nerulkar, searching for the traditional absolute in a contemporary city that never stops hustling.
