'The Pope's Exorcist' Trailer: Russell Crowe Is The Best Exorcist Of Them All In Julius Avery's New Horror Film

Ever since “The Exorcist” terrified audiences decades ago, Hollywood has been obsessed with possession horror. The idea of a demon taking over the body of a helpless person is the perfect mix of realism with the supernatural that it has become a story told over and over again. But this is the first time we see the story of the exorcist of all exorcists, Father Gabriele Amorth, better known as “The Pope’s Exorcist.”

As seen in the trailer for “The Pope’s Exorcist,” the film follows the typical story of a helpless person possessed by a demon, who requires a priest to help get rid of the evil entity. However, this demon only wants to deal with Father Amorth, who reports directly to the Pope. But why would a demon choose to confront the greatest exorcist of them all? I guess we’ll have to watch to find out.

The film stars Russell Crowe, Daniel Zovatto, Alex Essoe, and Franco Nero. “The Pope’s Exorcist” is directed by Julius Avery. The filmmaker is probably best known for his 2018 breakout film, “Overlord.” He also directed “Samaritan,” but the less spoken about that film, the better.

“The Pope’s Exorcist” debuts in theaters on April 14. You can watch the trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis:

Inspired by the actual files of Father Gabriele Amorth, Chief Exorcist of the Vatican (Academy Award®-winner Russell Crowe), The Pope’s Exorcist follows Amorth as he investigates a young boy’s terrifying possession and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden.
