Watch: New Clip From ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Shows Off Harry Gregson-Williams’ Old School Score

So far, so good. Jon Favreau‘s “Cowboys & Aliens” will premiere for the crowds at Comic-Con in just a few weeks and it’s a big show of confidence (and thanks) from the filmmaker. As M. Night Shyamalan well knows, the geeks in San Diego aren’t shy are about sharing their feelings but Favreau must feel like he’s got a big winner on his hands and if the trailers and clips live up to their promise, he’ll be right.

Moviefone has debuted a new clip from the sci-fi/western mashup and what immediately struck us was the surprisingly old school score by Harry Gregson-Williams. The composer is certainly no stranger to blockbuster films — last year he tuned up “The Town,” “Unstoppable” and “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” — but this feels almost like something out of a lost ’80s Spielberg film. It’s almost as if John Williams reconstructed a score out of music cues from classic westerns. With every blockbuster sci-fi seemingly all doing the electronic music infused, metallic soundscape this brief snippet of music is a breath of fresh air and we hope it’s indicative of the rest of the pieces in the film. It certainly promises to stand alongside Michael Giacchino‘s “Super 8” score as a highlight for the summer season.

Anyway, you can see Olivia Wilde get snatched up by alien thingy below. But hell, if you just want to press play and close your eyes, that’ll be fine too. “Cowboys & Aliens” rides into theaters on July 29th.
