‘We Can Be Heroes’ Teaser: Robert Rodriguez Builds His Superhero Universe In Netflix’s Family Film

Even if you’re a diehard fan of Robert Rodriguez, you might not connect with his family films. There’s nothing wrong with that, as the audience for “Desperado” is very different than the one for “Spy Kids.” But Netflix is hoping there are plenty of those fans of his family features that would love to see the director build out a proper superhero universe in “We Can Be Heroes.”

As seen in the teaser for “We Can Be Heroes,” the film is a pseudo-sequel to “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl” and takes a look at the next generation of superheroes in this new cinematic universe. After an alien invasion defeats the world’s best heroes, their children must band together to somehow defeat the enemy their parents couldn’t. And yes, one of the kids is the offspring of the aforementioned Sharkboy and Lavagirl, though as Twitter is quick to point out, the film doesn’t feature the original Sharkboy actor, Taylor Lautner.

Instead, “We Can Be Heroes” features a pretty great ensemble cast that includes veterans like Pedro Pascal, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christian Slater, and Boyd Holbrook in addition to folks such as YaYa Gosselin, Vivien Blair, Isaiah Russell-Bailey, Akira Akbar, Lyon Daniels, Nathan Blair, Lotus Blossom, Hala Finley, Andy Walken, Dylan Henry Lau, Andrew Diaz, Taylor Dooley, Sung Kang, Haley Reinhart, J. Quinton Johnson, Brittany Perry-Russell, Brently Heilbron, and JJ Dashnaw. As mentioned, the film is written and directed by Robert Rodriguez.

“We Can Be Heroes” is set to arrive on Netflix on January 1, 2021. You can watch the new teaser below.

Here’s the synopsis:

When alien invaders kidnap Earth’s superheroes, their children must team up and learn to work together if they want to save their parents and the world.
