After the success of “Fallout” last year on Prime Video, is this story surprising? Variety reports that Amazon MGM has plans to adapt the “Wolfenstein” video games into a TV series. “Station Eleven” creator Patrick Somerville is on board as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner via his chaoticgood.tv banner, with Kilter Films, the banner behind “Fallout,” also producing the project.

The “Wolfenstein” series needs no introduction for gamers, as Amazon MGM cheekily notes in the show’s brief logline: “The story of killing Nazis is evergreen.” First created in 1981, the video game franchise typically follows WWII US soldier William “B.J.” Blazkowicz as he goes behind enemy lines to fight Nazis, particularly Nazis using experimental science and the occult to their advantage. The first two games in the series were top-down perspective games, but 1992’s “Wolfenstein 3D” shifted the franchise to first-person shooters, popularizing the genre in the process. There’s 14 titles in the “Wolfenstein” series in all, with MachineGames deeveloping them and Bethesda Softworks publishing.
14 games is a lot of lore, and with plot details under wraps for the “Wolfenstein” TV series, the show could be derivative or a completely original story. Either way, expect Blazkowicz to mow down Nazis in full force. Jerk Gustafsson will executive produce the series via MachineGames, as will James Altman for Keyframe Films. Other executive producers include Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham via Kilter Films.
“Wolfenstein” is one of several TV shows Amazon MGM has in development that adapts a gaming franchise. Others include “Mass Effect,” “God Of War,” and the long-gestating “Warhammer 40,000” series with Henry Cavill attached to star. Meanwhile, “Wolfenstein” continues the Amazon MGM-Kilter Films partnership after “The Peripheral” and “Fourth Wing,” currently in development.
hould this project move forward, it would be the latest video game TV series at Amazon for Kilter Films. The company currently produces the hit Prime Video series “Fallout,” which is currently prepping to release its second season in December and has already been renewed for a third.
Meanwhile, Somerville’s other TV credits beyond “Station Eleven” include “Maniac” over at Netflix” and writing and supervising producer credits on HBO‘s “The Leftovers.” Other writing credits include “The Bridge” and “24: Live Another Day.” Somerville transitioned to television after publishing four books as a novelist: “The Cradle,” “The Bright River,” and the short story collections “The Universe In Miniature In Minature” and “Trouble.”
Stay tuned to see if “Wolfenstein” ever gets beyond development. As for “Fallout”? Season 2 is already on the way, with a third season greenlit.
