Jordan Scott Replaces Her Father Ridley As Director Of 'Gucci,' Penélope Cruz To Star

Penelope CruzAt the beginning of the year we broke down the myriad of projects that Ridley Scott was attached to (he's added a few more since then as well), and the bottom line is, the 75-year-old director just isn't going to get to them all. But filmmaking runs in the Scott family, and Ridley's daughter, Jordan Scott, has already spread her wings. She helmed the somewhat underrated boarding school drama "Cracks" starring Eva Green and Juno Temple a couple of years back, and she's done commercial work as well for Agent Provocateur, Armani and more. But now another fashion label is getting her attention.

Jordan will be taking over for her dad Ridley to direct a movie about famed fashion house Gucci. Scott has been developing this as far back as 2006 and in 2009, and it looked to be his next film after "Robin Hood" with Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio tipped as stars. Word then went quiet until last fall when Natalie Portman's name became attached to the film. Again word went quiet, and Portman has moved on to other things, but it looks like Ridley's "The Counselor" star Penélope Cruz will take the lead, as she's in talks for the role.

The movie would tell the story of the fashion designer family, which came to a bloody end when wife Reggiani Patrizia allegedly hired hitmen to kill head Maurizio Gucci. It's not all perfumes and handbags, people.

Certainly, we like the idea of handing it over to Jordan — as we said, she showed tremendous skill and particular sensitivity in "Cracks" and a great eye behind the camera — and we'll pretty much watch Cruz in anything. But does this mean the movie is closer to happening or just another step in a long development process? We'll soon see. [The Wrap]
