There wasn’t that much to get excited about during WarnerMedia’s 2-hour presentation to investors Tuesday centered on their new streaming service, HBO Max, but the executives on hand saved one surprise till the end. The same day that it cancelled the long in the works Naomi Watts-led “Game of Thrones” prequel it announced that another prequel, “House of the Dragon,” was given a straight to series order. And, yes, dragons.
The series will be based on a House of Targaryen story from “Game of Thrones” creator George R.R. Martin and “Colony” co-creator Ryan Condal. Miguel Sapochnik, who won Emmy and DGA Awards for directing the “GoT” episode “Battle of the Bastards,” will share showrunning duties with Condal. This is the first project in what is a multi-year deal between Sapochnik and HBO.
Set 300 years before the “Game of Thrones” timeline everyone knows and loves, “House of Dragon” will center on the House Targaryen. This is the house that gave birth to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), a fan favorite known as the Queen of Dragons for her three gigantic “offspring.” The Targaryen’s ruled the seven kingdoms of Westeros, but Daenerys’ father eventually became known as the “Mad King” but was the 16th member of his house to sit on the throne. Deadline reports that the Dragons civil war referenced in the recent series will make up a major portion of the prequel’s storyline.
There are now three other “Game of Thrones” prequels publicly in development. It is unclear when “House of Dragon” will arrive on HBO Max, but 2020 seems unlikely.
