‘Fjord’ Trailer: Sebastian Stan & Renate Reinsve Face A Family Crisis In Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or Winner

Cristian Mungiu’s Cannes winner centers on a devout Romanian-Norwegian couple whose family comes under scrutiny in a remote fjord village.

Cristian Mungiu doesn’t tend to make dramas where private conflict stays private for long. The Romanian filmmaker behind “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,” “Beyond The Hills,” “Graduation,” and “R.M.N.” returns with “Fjord,” a new Norway-set family drama starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve.

The film premiered in Competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or (read our review). The Cannes synopsis centers on the Gheorghius, a devout Romanian-Norwegian couple who move to a remote fjord village and grow close with their neighbors, the Halbergs. But when their adolescent daughter shows up at school with bruises, the community begins questioning whether the family’s traditional upbringing is connected to what happened.

The cast also includes Lisa Carlehed, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Henrikke Lund-Olsen, and Vanessa Ceban. Mungiu writes and directs, with Tudor Vladimir Panduru serving as cinematographer, Kaspar Kaae composing the score, and Mircea Olteanu editing.

The Playlist reviewed “Fjord” out of Cannes, calling it a “fascinating yet flawed” drama that tackles “family, society, faith, abuse, punishment, and community,” while praising Stan and Reinsve’s understated work.
