‘Gatto’ Trailer: Mark Ruffalo & Laurence Fishburne Join Pixar’s Venice-Set Feline Adventure

The original animated adventure from ‘Luca’ filmmaker Enrico Casarosa follows a scrappy black cat indebted to a feline mob boss in Venice.

There’s been a long-running charm to Pixar stories about hidden worlds operating just beneath our own, and Disney and Pixar’s next original animated film, “Gatto,” appears to be leaning into that tradition with a decidedly Italian twist. The studio has released the first teaser trailer and poster for the film, a new animated adventure set in the feline-run underbelly of Venice, Italy.

The film adds Mark Ruffalo and Laurence Fishburne to its voice cast, with Ruffalo voicing Nero, a scrappy black cat navigating the canal-ridden, superstitious city. Fishburne voices Rocco, a ruthless local feline mob boss to whom Nero is indebted. According to the studio, the teaser introduces the two characters in a comic interrogation scene involving another cat.

The official synopsis reads: “In ‘Gatto,’ after years of maneuvering the canal-ridden, superstitious city of Venice, Italy, Nero begins to question whether he’s lived the right life. Indebted to Rocco, the local feline mob boss, Nero finds himself in a quandary and is forced to forge a truly unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose—unless Venice gets the better of him first.”

“Gatto” also reunites the creative team behind “Luca,” with Enrico Casarosa directing and Andrea Warren producing. Casarosa’s “Luca,” which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, also explored Italian coastal life through Pixar’s coming-of-age lens. However, “Gatto” sounds like it may be headed into slightly darker, more noir-inflected territory with its Venetian mob-boss premise.
