Kirsten Dunst Says She’s Reuniting With Sofia Coppola For A Period Piece Next Year

Actress Kirsten Dunst (“Power of the Dog”) is gearing up for a big reunion with writer/director Sofia Coppola and giving us some minor clues about the secretive project. Admittedly, Dunst was only able to share a few details during her chat with Vogue Magazine to promote her latest film “Roofman,” but we’re still getting a small leg up on what we could be expecting from the untitled film, including that it’ll be a period piece shot in the United States with Dunst revealing she’ll be playing a reason person, not a fictional one.

Here is how that exchange went down between Dunst and Vogue as the outlet tried to pull details out of the actress:

You recently said that Sofia wrote a script for you that starts shooting next year. I know you can’t share any specifics, but I wanted to ask three yes-or-no questions: Are you playing a real person?
Yes, but not someone who I’d consider famous.

Is it a period piece?
Yes.
Is it going to shoot in the United States?
Yes. I think she’d be okay with me sharing that?
I don’t wanna get you in trouble with Sofia.
Can you imagine? I can’t even picture her raising her voice. But I know she’s writing something else too, so we’re not quite there yet in terms of a start date.

Interestingly enough, the three previous films Dunst and Coppola have made together were period projects with the 70s-set “The Virgin Suicides,” “Marie Antoinette,” and her remake of the Civil War thriller “The Beguiled.” So, this new fourth feature would help continue with that trend of exploring stories set in the past.

Earlier in the month, Kirsten Dunst voiced an openness to the idea of reprising the Mary Jane Watson role for a hypothetical “Spider-Man 4” (director Sam Raimi nearly made a fourth installment before Sony Pictures pulled the plug during prep stage; instead, the studio brass decided to reboot with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone), mentioning MJ and Peter Parker being parents.

“That would be cool, right? I mean, I don’t know if the fans are into it. I feel like that is an interesting movie, right? Me and Tobey doing that again…with kids,” Dunst said of a return to the “Spider-Man” franchise.

“Roofman,” Dunst’s true-crime comedy hailing from director Derek Cianfrance and co-starring Channing Tatum, is currently in theaters.
