Adam McKay Says He Was Approached About 'Guardians 3' But He Would Rather Tackle 'Silver Surfer'

Adam McKay is making the rounds right now, talking up his latest film “Vice.” However, since it’s 2018 and if you talk about movies, you absolutely must talk about Marvel Studios, the director is obviously going to receive some superhero questions. Who needs to talk about Christian Bale and his performance as former Vice President Dick Cheney when you can talk about live-action films about superpowered people dressing in elaborate costumes?

On the most recent Happy Sad Confused podcast, McKay was asked about his ties to Marvel Studios and if there’s a hero that he’d be most interested in tackling in a film. For those that don’t know, after Edgar Wright left “Ant-Man,” McKay was brought on by actor Paul Rudd and director Peyton Reed to help craft the script. He did a similar thing for the sequel, as well.

Add to that the fact that McKay is an outspoken fan of Marvel Comics, and what you end up with is an obvious question – what hero would he like to make a film about?

“’Silver Surfer’ is the one I want to do, man. I would do anything to do ‘Silver Surfer’ because, visually, you could do what the Wachowskis did with ‘Speed Racer’ with the ‘Silver Surfer,'” McKay said. “At the same time, there’s a great emotional story in there, man, where Norrin Radd [aka Silver Surfer] has to make the choice to save his planet. That would be the one, but I think Fox owns the rights …”

When it was brought to McKay’s attention that Fox and Disney are about to merge, and therefore, the idea of a “Silver Surfer” film isn’t so crazy, he said, “I think you’ve just created the ‘Silver Surfer’ movie. I think after Dick Cheney and economic collapse, maybe I need a little break.”

Also of interest for those who enjoy the Marvel Studios films, McKay admitted that studio president Kevin Feige did approach him about the recently vacated “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” gig. He revealed that he was approached but that’s not terribly uncommon, as he has a good relationship with Feige and they talk about a variety of projects.

“We’ve talked a little bit. Yeah. We were kicking around the idea of the ‘Inhumans’ at one point. We’re always kind of talking. I think Feige is just the greatest and what they’re doing is amazing,” said McKay.

For those more interested in McKay’s “serious” work, “Vice” hits theaters December 25.
