Andrew Garfield Said Lying To Everyone About ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Was “Thrilling” & “Weirdly Enjoyable”

After promoting his two films “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and “tick, tick…boom!” it seemed as if all the extra questions about potentially appearing in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” were weighing heavy on Andrew Garfield. Unlike Tobey Maguire, who just stayed out of the public eye, and Tom Holland, who was busy talking about other aspects of the film, Garfield was getting hammered for months about whether or not he was showing up. It culminated in a clip that went viral where Garfield said, “I’m done,” and seemingly was sick of the whole situation. But speaking to The Wrap, that wasn’t the case at all. Garfield called it “weirdly enjoyable.”

In a new interview, where he can finally talk about the truth about showing up in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Andrew Garfield explained his true feelings about having to lie to journalists and fans for months and months. It was stressful, sure, but apparently, the actor kinda enjoyed himself.

“It was stressful, I’m not gonna lie,” Garfield said. “It was rather stressful but also weirdly enjoyable.”

He added, “It was like this massive game of ‘Werewolf’ that I was playing with journalists and with people guessing, and it was very fun.”

For those who don’t know the insanely popular party game, “Werewolf,” it’s a social deduction game where a group of players is trying to figure out which one is lying, while the werewolf is trying to keep it a secret and kill other players in the middle of the night. It’s all about lies and deceit…but in good fun.

“There were moments where I was like, ‘God, I hate lying.’ I don’t like to lie and I’m not a good liar, but I kept framing it as a game. And I kept imagining myself purely as a fan of that character, which is not hard to do,” Garfield continued. “I placed myself in that position of, ‘Well, what would I want to know? Would I want to be toyed with? Would I want to be lied to? Would I want to be kept on my toes guessing? Would I want to discover it when I went to the theater? Would I want to be guessing, guessing, guessing?’”

Obviously, Garfield believes that the fans would have much rather he lie and lie and lie than spoil what was going to be a huge reveal in the film.

“I would want the actor to do an incredibly good job at convincing me he wasn’t in it,” he said. “And then I would want to lose my mind in the theater when my instinct was proven right. That’s what I would want.”

Ultimately, Garfield said the charade was “thrilling” as he once again compared it to being the bad guy in a game of “Werewolf.” And because of the thrill and preserving the secret, despite what it seemed, the actor was ok with doing it.

“I was happy to do it, but it was a lot of work on everyone’s part,” he said. “It obviously gave people a big thrill in the theater, and what more do you want from a theater experience than a thrill?…“It’s been a rare experience to play that mass game of ‘Werewolf’ with every single Spider-Man fan in the world. That’s been incredibly fun.”

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” is in theaters now.
