Ang Lee To Direct A Bruce Lee Biopic Starring The Filmmaker's Son

Ang Lee has finally found his next big film. And you better believe, there will be a lot of people anxiously awaiting what he has coming. You see, Ang Lee has enlisted his own son to star in a biopic about the legendary action star, Bruce Lee

According to Deadline, Sony has signed Ang Lee to direct an untitled Bruce Lee biopic. Going a step further, Ang Lee has already found who he wants to play Bruce Lee in the film, and the filmmaker didn’t have to look far at all. His own son, Mason Lee, has been brought in to star in the lead role. The biopic is written by Dan Futterman, who previously worked on biopics such as “Foxcatcher” and “Capote.”

Bruce Lee, as if anyone needs a reminder, was one of the first breakout Asian actors in America. Starting as a martial arts teacher in Hollywood, Lee would transition into starring roles thanks to his breakout as Kato in the “Green Hornet” TV series. From there, he would grow to become just an absolutely legendary action film star, culminating in the release of “Enter the Dragon.” Unfortunately, Bruce Lee tragically died at the age of 32, before the release of ‘Dragon.’

“Accepted as neither fully American nor fully Chinese, Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese Kung Fu to the world, a scientist of combat and an iconic performing artist who revolutionized both the martial arts and action cinema,” Ang Lee said. “I feel compelled to tell the story of this brilliant, unique human being who yearned for belonging, possessed tremendous power in a 135-pound-frame, and who, through tireless hard work, made impossible dreams into reality.”

Ang Lee’s credentials are unquestioned. He’s the filmmaker behind acclaimed features such as “Brokeback Mountain,” “The Ice Storm,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” and “Life of Pi.” His most recent film is the action feature, “Gemini Man,” starring Will Smith

Mason Lee is a bit less known, having really only been seen by American audiences in “The Hangover Part II” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.” However, he’s a much bigger star in Asia, where he has been nominated for a number of awards.

There’s no release date set for the Bruce Lee biopic, but with Ang lee and his son on board, there will be plenty of anticipation for what they can deliver.
