‘Beef’ Creator Lee Sung Jin “Perfectly Happy” To End With Season 2, But “Definitely Open” To Exploring More

The Emmy-winner creator of the acclaimed Netflix series “Beef,” Lee Sung Jin, has expressed his interested to possibly ending the show with two seasons, but isn’t completely closing the door on making another season.

Speaking with the folks over at The Hollywood Reporter, Lee has revealed his apprehension about jumping too quickly into tackling a third season and wouldn’t be upset if they simply ended the show with Season 2.

“I’d be perfectly happy if this were the last season,” Lee recently told THR. “I think it’s really emotionally taxing, the making of it and the rollout of it…I feel like I’ve said it through two seasons of ‘Beef.’ But I do remain open if the universe shows me something in the future and it feels right for Beef. I’m definitely open.”

One of those reasons that Season 3 doesn’t seem like a huge priority might have something to do with the creative getting into the film world thanks to “Beef” director and collaborator Jake Schreier (Lee notably did uncredited work on “Thunderbolts*”), who enlisted Lee’s help on a new draft of the “X-Men” script for Marvel Studios‘ high-profile franchise reboot alongside Joanna Calo (“Thunderbolts*,” “Beef”).

Thankfully, Netflix seems to have Lee’s back on whatever he ultimately decides to do with “Beef” and the anthology series’ future. We wouldn’t be all that shocked if Lee, who has credits like “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” ended up tackling new ideas at the streaming service or trying his hand at original film scripts.

What the future holds for “Beef” isn’t entirely clear at the moment, as Lee ends up focusing on different projects like “X-Men” and possibly other unannounced things in the works. In 2023, he signed an overall deal with Netflix, and that could mean more streaming projects could be on the way down the line.
