Deadline reports that Margot Robbie‘s “Ocean’s” prequel is moving forward, and with a new leading man: none other than Bradley Cooper (replacing Ryan Gosling, who was the first name attached). Cooper is in final talks to star opposite Robbie in the film, and if he signs on, it’ll be the first time the pair work together. The news comes just a couple of months after “Twisters” director Lee Isaac Chung was announced to helm the picture. Along with starring, Robbie also produces the film via her LuckyChap banner, with Carrie Solomon penning the screenplay, based on characters by George Clayton Johnson & Jack Golden Russell.
Will Cooper be the only noteworthy cast addition? Certainly not, given the high-profile ensembles the “Ocean’s” movies curate. However, who else joins the prequel remains anyone’s guess, as does what the film’s plot may be. It’ll no doubt be a heist movie, but the whos, whats, and whys are a Warner Bros. secret, at least for now.
If Cooper signs on for Robbie’s “Oceans” prequel, it’ll be his first starring role since he played Leonard Bernstein in the biopic he directed, “Maestro.” Cooper’s next directorial outing, the dramedy “Is This Thing On?” will hit theaters on December 19. He also plans to star in a new “Bullitt” movie at Warner Bros., with Steven Spielberg on board to direct, but that remains in active development for now.
As for Robbie, she’s coming off “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” and has Emerald Fennell‘s “Wuthering Heights” next; that film is set to hit theaters on Valentine’s Day 2026.
Cooper’s potential casting in the prequel comes on the heels of George Clooney confirming that “Ocean’s Fourteen” will shoot next year. Let’s see if that happens, as that long-gestating sequel still lacks a director; Edward Berger turned down the chance to helm. However, if that sequel is also a go at Warner Bros., then Robbie’s prequel and a new sequel may hit theaters around the same time in 2027. And if that happens, expect the studio to “Barbenheimer” their marketing efforts full tilt.
Stay tuned for more details on LuckChap’s “Ocean’s” prequel as they arrive.
