With Emmy season in full swing, the Gotham Film & Media Institute announced today the nominations for the 3rd Gotham Television Awards, and there were some genuine surprises among the expanded 12 categories. Recognizing the best in new television programs and docuseries, Netflix’s comedy series “Big Mistakes” led all comedy series with four nominations, including Breakthrough Comedy Series and acting noms for star and creator Dan Levy, Taylor Ortega, and Laurie Metcalf. Another Netflix release, “Death By Lightning,” dominated the Limited or Anthology categories with four mentions, including acting nods for Matthew Macfadyen, Michael Shannon, and Nick Offerman.
“Pluribus,” “I Love LA,” “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” “Beef,” “Alien: Earth,” and “DTF St. Louis” earned three nominations each.

Breakthrough Comedy Series nominees are “Big Mistakes,” “I Love LA,” “The Chair Company,” “Long Story Short,” and “Too Much.” Despite better overall reviews than most of these programs, “Margot’s Got Money Troubles,” “Wonder Man,” “The Lowdown,” “Widow’s Bay,” and “Ponies,” among others, were snubbed. The Gothams might want to consider more critics on this voting committee next year.
Breakthrough Drama Series were more predictable with “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” “Alien: Earth,” “Pluribus,” “Dept. Q,” and “Task” making the cut. It’s unclear if “Heated Rivalry” qualified under Gotham rules.
Breakthrough Limited or Anthology Series nominees included “Beef,” “Death by Lightning,” “DTF St. Louis,” “Half Man,” and “Lord of the Flies.” “Bait” and “The Beast in Me” were snubbed.
In a statement, Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of the Gotham, noted, “With today’s nominations, our third annual Gotham Television Awards celebrates an incredible year of breakthrough comedies, dramas, and original films, as well as a newly expanded Limited or Anthology Series category recognizing where some of television’s boldest work is being made. As the first awards show of the new television season, we’re proud to bring together the industry’s most exciting voices, celebrate the year’s achievements, and deepen our commitment to supporting the creative community we represent here at The Gotham.”
Winners will be announced in a ceremony on June 1 in New York.
