At long last, a favorite from a couple of Sundances ago will hit theaters. That’s right, “Fairyland” will finally reach general audiences this Fall, and may even have an outside shot at awards consideration for stars Emilia Jones and Scoot McNairy.

Based on Alysia Abbott’s award-winning book “Fairyland: A Memoir Of My Father,” Jones and McNairy star as a father and daughter navigating their fraught relationship in the 1970s/80s San Francisco after the father comes out as gay.

Produced by Oscar® winner Sofia Coppola and based on the acclaimed memoir of the same name by Alysia Abbott, “Fairyland” is a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of San Francisco’s vibrant cultural scene in the 1970s and ’80s. This captivating film chronicles a father-daughter relationship as it evolves through an era of bohemian decadence to the sober and heartbreaking era of the AIDS crisis.
Along with Jones and McNairy, “Fairyland” also stars Cody Fern, Maria Bakalova, Adam Lambert, Geena Davis, and Nessa Dougherty.
Andrew Durham directs “Fairyland” and adapts Abbott’s memoir for the big screen. He also produced the film with Coppola, Megan Carlson, Siena Oberman, Greg Lauritano, and Laure Sudreau.
“Fairyland” had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, receiving positive reviews from critics. However, The Playlist only awarded it a C+ in our review, writing that its “overwritten script diminishes some potentially truly moving moments throughout the picture.” Read the entire review here.
