'The Invisible Man' Super Bowl Teaser: Blumhouse Reimagines The Universal Monster As An Abusive Ex

So far, 2020 has not been a great year for horror films. “The Turning,” “Gretel & Hansel,” and “The Grudge” have all been massive disappointments, both creatively and financially. Well, Blumhouse is hoping that by the end of February, the genre’s luck in the year will change thanks to the upcoming film “The Invisible Man.”

And as seen in the new Super Bowl teaser for “The Invisible Man,” the film is using the iconic character in a completely new way. Instead of the Invisible Man wrapped in gauze and wearing a trench coat, Blumhouse is adding a social message to the lore, making the title character an abusive ex-boyfriend that uses his newfound abilities to effectively haunt his partner and drive her insane. Writer-director Leigh Whannell (“Upgrade”) has crafted a horror film that will no doubt scare audiences, but not in the way they might be anticipating.

The filmmaker has enlisted Elisabeth Moss to lead the way as the victim of the title character’s abuse and torment. It’s clear from the footage shown that the abuse is taking its toll on the character, as she fully believes that her ex is back as an invisible person, but she’s finding that her friends and family just think that maybe she’s going through some sort of severe PTSD episode.

Blumhouse’s “The Invisible Man” is the second film from the production company to debut in February. Two weeks prior to the release of this Universal film, on February 14, the company will release an updated re-imagining of the classic TV series “Fantasy Island,” given a new, horrific layer to the story.
