‘Ghostbusters: Night Shift’ First Look: Netflix’s 1994-Set Animated Series Coming In 2027

Well, it looks like we’re getting “Ghostbusters: Night Shift” a lot sooner than we had initially expected, as Netflix announced earlier this month that the new animated series is coming in 2027, and with that, we have some artwork from the in-development show to share, which should make fans excited to see more.

Netflix’s official animation account on social media posted two first-look images (a still and concept artwork) from Sony Pictures Animation‘s “Ghostbusters: Night Shift,” and this marks the first animated effort since 1997’s “Extreme Ghostbusters,” which was a minor follow-up to “The Real Ghostbusters” (helped really push the franchise merch sales into the stratosphere via toy sales connected to the popular show that debuted in the 1980s).

Speaking of the 1990s, the new show is said to be taking place in 1994, according to the official synopsis provided to us:

“New York City, 1994 — Five years after the Ghostbusters took the Statue of Liberty for a walk, a new wave of supernatural terror hits the Big Apple, forcing a group of scrappy, young New Yorkers — untrained, underappreciated and kinda sorta responsible for the problem — to put on proton packs, face their fears and bust some ghosts.”

Another bit of connective tissue going on is the mayoral run of former EPA agent/villain Walter Peck, and this new team will have a pet, a terror-puppy, a cuter, miniaturized version of the terror dogs from the original “Ghostbusters.” We assume that the new pet will be taking the place of Slimer as the group’s spectral companion.

Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan are executive producing “Night Shift” alongside showrunners Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan, with Amie Karp and Dan Aykroyd also on the producing team. We should note that the streamer and Sony previously partnered together for the mega-popular “KPop Demon Hunters,” so there are huge expectations for their future projects.

That’s not it, as Netflix also shared with us images (as part of their animated slate announcements connected to the Anncey Film Festival in France) from “Ray Gun,” the streamer’s high-profile animated movie hailing from “The Incredibles” director/co-creator Brad Bird and arriving on December 18 with Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Waits as part of the film’s voice cast. The pic is set “in Metropia, a gigantic city in an alternate future as seen from 1939, private eye Raymond Gunn (Rockwell) is drawn into a case involving aliens, murder, and a multimedia star named Venus Nova (Johansson).”
