All things considered, it’s a relatively light month for television. That said, there’s still a lot to dig through, with both big-name series and A-List actors arriving for the start of summer. From the latest from the world of “Game of Thrones” to a classic film getting a television update with Amy Adams at the forefront, there’s plenty for all kinds of fans.
There’s the latest romance book adaptation looking to garner a dedicated audience, along with a comedy series from Mindy Kaling, Season 2 of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” the return of the tense relationship between the vampires Louis and Lestat, and more. And, of course, there’s the final season of the popular “The Bear,” which will undoubtedly be the big conversation starter of the month, not just about whether it’s a comedy or a drama.
“Not Suitable For Work”
Mindy Kaling returns as showrunner for the comedy series “Not Suitable for Work.” The coming-of-age series follows a group of twenty-somethings as they navigate their professional and personal lives in Manhattan. Charlie Grandy is the creator of a cast that includes Ella Hunt, Avantika, Will Angus, Jack Martin, Nicholas Duvernay, and Jay Ellis.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres June 2 on Hulu.
“Cape Fear”
Amy Adams stars in the series “Cape Fear,” the third adaptation of the book “The Executioners,” following the 1962 and 1991 films. The film follows a married couple whose lives are threatened when a notorious killer whom they represented nearly two decades prior is released from prison. Javier Bardem, Patrick Wilson, Lily Collias, Joe Anders, and CCH Pounder round out the main cast. The series is created by Nick Antosca (“The Act,” “Brand New Cherry Flavor.”)
Release Date: The series premieres June 5 on Apple TV.
“Alice + Steve”
Created by Sophie Goodhart and directed by Tom Kingsley, “Alice + Steve” stars Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clemet as lifelong friends. However, their friendship is put on rocky ground when Steve begins to date Alice’s daughter. Yali Topol Margalith and Joel Fry also star.
Release Date: The series premieres June 8 on Hulu.
“Every Year After”
Romance is having a major moment in television this past year, between “Heated Rivalry,” “Off Campus,” and more, with “Every Year After” looking to join the ranks. Based on the book “Every Summer After” by Carley Fortuen, the series, developed by Amy B. Harris and Leila Gerstein, follows two lifelong friends who grapple with the idea that their first love was also their soulmate. Sadie Soverall, Matt Cornett, Aurora Perrineau, Abigail Cowen, Michael Bradway, Joseph Chiu, and Elisha Cuthbert star.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres June 10 on Prime Video.
“The Listeners”
Rebecca Hall stars in the psychological drama series “The Listeners,” adapted by Jordan Tannahill from his novel of the same name. Directed by Janicza Bravo (“Zola”), the five-part series follows an English teacher whose life begins to unravel when she starts hearing a low humming sound that no one else around her can hear. The cast also includes Ollie West, Prasanna Puwanarajah, Gayle Rankin, Amr Waked, and Mia Tharia.
Release Date: Premieres June 12 on Starz.
