'Living' Teaser: Bill Nighy Stars In This Remake Of Akira Kurosawa's 'Ikiru'

Bill Nighy is a treasure. We can all agree on that, right? Well, if you’ve been anxiously waiting for the latest, greatest Nighy performance, Sony Pictures Classics is here to give you what you need with “Living.”

As seen in the new teaser for “Living,” the film stars Nighy as a veteran civil servant that has to take stock of his life after a medical diagnosis changes everything. The film is written by Kazuo Ishiguro and is a remake of the 1952 film, “Ikiru,” by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. “Living” is directed by Oliver Hermanus, who is probably best known for his acclaimed films, “Shirley Adams” and “Beauty.”

We were able to catch a screening of “Living” at this year’s Sundance, and in our review, we said, “Director Oliver Hermanus and screenwriter Kazuo Ishiguro could have placed the story in contemporary times, making a new version more palatable for some critics, but instead, set it in the exact same era only interchanging London for Tokyo. Their bold arrow aimed at the heart of the movie gods pays off wonderfully as their moving collaboration, ‘Living’ distinguishes itself as one of the best films to debut at the 2022 edition of the Sundance Film Festival.”

“Living” debuts in theaters this Christmas season. You can watch the teaser below.

Here’s the synopsis:

1953. A London shattered by WWII is still recovering. Williams (Bill Nighy), a veteran civil servant, is an impotent cog within the city’s bureaucracy as it struggles to rebuild. Buried under paperwork at the office, lonely at home, his life has long felt empty and meaningless. Then a shattering medical diagnosis forces him to take stock – and to try and grasp fulfillment before it goes beyond reach.
