Netflix Nabs The Wachowskis & Michael Straczynski's TV Series 'Sense8'

nullThough last year’s “Cloud Atlas” wasn’t the barn-burner that some tipped it to be, The Wachowskis aren’t looking back, and are instead getting back to work. Not only are they working on their directorial follow-up “Jupiter Ascending,” their first to tackle on their own since 2008’s “Speed Racer,” but the duo are set to embark on creating their first television series as well, and they’ve now found a home for the sci-fi show.

Hellbent on sticking it to the networks, Netflix yesterday completed a deal to bring the Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski‘s “Sense8” to its subscribing members. First announced last fall, details on the show have been kept secret, with the only description of it coming out of the mouths of the Wachowskis themselves, who said “several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox ‘Sense8’ was born.”

Whatever the show ends up being about, it promises to be something special as both the Wachowskis and Straczynski have genuine sci-fi bona fides, with the latter responsible for the mid-90’s cult TV show “Babylon 5.” It’s also nice bit of serendipity that directors as forward-thinking as the Wachowskis will have their TV debut on a streaming service.

In other news, the siblings’ upcoming starry sci-fi epic, which stars Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne and Sean Bean, has added another player to the cast, the unknown Australian TV actor Kick Gurry. Though few outside that country have had a chance to see his work, it seems that he’s impressing the right people as he has a role in next year’s “All You Need Is Kill,” the Tom Cruise-starring and Doug Liman-helmed adaptation of the Hiroshi Sakurazaka Japanese novel. As usual, there’s no word on exactly what his role is.

“Sense8” is set to premiere sometime late next year on Netflix, and “Jupiter Ascending” floats into theaters July 25th, 2014. [Coming Soon/Deadline]
