As critics and audiences mull 2025 awards season predictions (is “One Battle After Another” really an Oscar Best Picture frontrunner? Could Dwayne Johnson really snag Best Actor for “The Smashing Machine“?), another intriguing narrative looms. And that’s the success of James Cameron‘s “Avatar: Fire And Ash” and the future of the billion-dollar franchise.
The latest sequel in the blockbuster franchise comes on the heels of the first and third highest-grossing films of all time (with Cameron’s 1997 film “Titanic” also at fourth on that list). Will “Fire And Ash” soar to an even higher commercial gross, or are general audiences over Pandora and the Sully family saga? We’ll see what legs “Avatar” has left for its additional upcoming sequels when the new installment hits theaters in December.
Here’s a brief synopsis for the upcoming sequel, courtesy of 20th Century Studio:
Jake and Neytiri’s family grapples with grief after Neteyam’s death, encountering a new, aggressive Na’vi tribe, the Ash People, who are led by the fiery Varang, as the conflict on Pandora escalates and a new moral focus emerges.
The latest in the “Avatar” saga stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Joe David Moore, and CCH Pounder. The ensemble cast also includes Edie Falco, David Thewlis, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi, Britain Dalton, Jamie Flatters, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Brendan Cowell, and Baily Bass. Filip Geljo, Duane Evans, Jr., and Kate Winslet round out the main cast.
Cameron directs a script by him, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver for “Fire & Ash.” Cameron also produces the blockbuster with Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini.
“Avatar: Fire & Ash” hits theaters and IMAX on December 19, 2025. And need a refresher for where the franchise left off? No worries there: “Avatar: The Way of Water” returns to theaters in 32 for one week only, starting on October 3.
