Patton Oswalt Seemingly Confirms 'Eternals 2' In The Works With Chloe Zhao Returning To Direct

A couple of weeks ago, Marvel Studios stunned everyone at San Deigo Comic-Con by not only teasing the films and TV series coming over the next year, but the studio also unveiled a huge lineup of projects stretching all the way until the end of 2025. New “Avengers” films, a new “Captain America” feature, and a ton of other things were teased. But you know what wasn’t? An “Eternals” sequel. But apparently, Patton Oswalt didn’t get that memo and seems to have let it slip that Marvel Studios is moving ahead with a new Chloe Zhao-directed sequel.

Speaking on “The Today Show,” Patton Oswalt was asked a seemingly innocuous question about his role as Pip the Troll, seen in the end-credits scene of “Eternals.” There, we meet Pip as the little guy introduces Starfox, played by Harry Styles. But nothing else was learned about the characters and the entire “Eternals” franchise was left out of the big SDCC announcement. But not only did Oswalt say that Marvel is working on “Eternals 2,” the actor also said that Chloe Zhao is returning to direct the follow-up.

“They have announced there’s going to be an Eternals sequel. Chloé Zhao is going to direct it,” said Oswalt. “So, hopefully, there will be more adventures of Starfox and Pip.”

“They,” of course, didn’t announce anything, but oh well. Nothing like spilling the beans on national TV, huh?

When a sequel for “Eternals” wasn’t announced at SDCC, it wasn’t that much of a shock. The film is historically one of the worst-received Marvel Studios films, critically and commercially. The film didn’t do great box office, though it was released at a reasonably rough time during the pandemic. However, the reviews for “Eternals” were mostly pretty bad. But with D23 around the corner, in September, perhaps Marvel Studios has a secret sequel ready to be announced at the event?

Interestingly, Oswalt isn’t the only person over the past 24 hours to seemingly pre-announce a sequel before Marvel Studios was ready. We recently saw Oscar Isaac ostensibly confirm “Moon Knight” Season 2, which was also missing from Marvel’s recent string of announcements.

You can see Patton Oswalt next in “I Love My Dad,” which arrives in theaters on August 5.
